Reference Dubplates

INTRO

A reference dubplate is an individually cut phonograph record, traditionally used by artists and labels to preview and evaluate how a master mix translates to physical grooves before committing to mass production. It provides a tangible, high-fidelity reference point, ensuring the music sounds exactly as intended on a turntable. While the format famously served as the testing ground for underground electronic music and sound system culture, it has become an invaluable tool for modern independent music across all genres. For small labels and self-releasing artists, custom cuts offer a practical way to release limited editions, archival projects, or short runs without the steep costs and long turnaround times of factory pressings. Unlike traditional dubplates—which use a fragile, short-lived layer of nitrocellulose lacquer over an aluminum core—we cut directly onto solid, blank PVC records. Each disc is physically engraved in real-time on a custom-built cutting lathe. The result is a durable, heavy-duty record made from recycled plastic and organic pigments that offers the longevity, performance, and warm sound of standard pressed vinyl.
